Hello, my lovelies.

This week, the 52 homestead was transformed into a daggone winter wonderland!

It’s been three years since we had any appreciable snow here in the DMV—at most, we have gotten a dusting here and there. But this week, we got close to a foot, between two different storms.

I rather enjoyed it. As a disabled person, I’m not expected to be anywhere, so I didn’t have to be out in it and could just enjoy its quiet beauty.

The same could not be said for either my lovely roomie, who was stuck on treacherous roads for four hours at the peak of the first storm, or my dog, who found his potty conditions sub-optimal. He did like running around in it like a fool, though.

Toward the end of the week, I started feeling a bit poorly—congestion, scratchy throat, vertigo. TLR said that the Omicron symptoms are different from the earlier variants, and that folks at her medical office had similar symptoms when they had COVID, so we thought that it would be appropriate for me to get tested. Kaiser has at home test kits that you can pick up and drop back off. These are PCR tests that they send out to a lab, rather than the instant kits you could theoretically get in a drugstore, if there were ever any in stock.

The downside is that you need to make an appointment to pick up a kit, and the only available appointment times were 2:50 AM, 5:10 AM, 5:20 AM and Midnight the next day.

If you wonder why I love my roomie so, it’s because she set an alarm and got up in the middle of the night on a workday to go at 2:50 AM to get me a test. I mean…who is this goddess?

Her boyfriend dropped it off for me the next morning, and while I don’t have results yet, subsequent instant tests (procured by TLR meeting a friend in a damn parking lot…COVID is weird, y’all) have been negative and I do feel better, so…I don’t think it’s COVID at this point. Just a nasty head cold.

So, that was my week. Snow, vertigo and books. Two out of three ain’t bad, right?

I read three books this week:

Prodigal Son was everything I expect an Orphan X book to be—a complex plot, loads of violence and a surprising amount of personal growth from our boy X. I am now kind of on tenterhooks waiting for the next one (due later this year). How Sweet It Is was…awful. I would have DNF’d it..but I was sick enough to not want to start something else, so I plodded along. It *earned* that one-star rating on Goodreads. Awkward, stiff, amateurish. However the week was redeemed with Eight Perfect Hours, which was absolutely amazing. Loved it.

OK, that’s all from the freezing bay window at the front of the house. The snow may have stopped, but it’s still arctic out there!

Till next week, stay safe, stay warm, grab tests wherever you can find them (even in parking lots) and read something amazing. You deserve it.

  1. Glad to hear you’re feeling a bit better – what a fabulous roomie you have! I only enjoy snow when I can stay inside so thankfully, even though we had two snowfalls in the last 10 days, it hasn’t settled. I shall investigate Eight Perfect Hours, it sounds like something I would enjoy.

  2. I am glad your roommate made it home safely! The snow does look pretty in your photos! That was really nice of your roommate to wake up so early to get you a COVID test. I hadn’t realized they were handing them out at those odd hours, but it’s nice to know. I hope your results come back negative. I am glad you are starting to feel better. I am so glad you liked Eight Perfect Hours! I can’t wait to read it. I hope you have a great week and happy reading!

  4. Your roommate is truly a wonderful person, roommate, and friend. I don’t know of many people who would go to the lengths she did. Hope you continue to feel better as the week progresses 🤗. And those snow pictures are gorgeous.

  5. That snow is so beautiful. Wow, what a great roommate you have!! I hope they get better about testing and make it more convenient. I sure hope you don’t have COVID, or if you do, it stays mild. Happy Reading.

  6. Wow, all that snow! As someone who lives in the tropics, I’m more than a little jealous. Especially since it’s been oppressively hot over the last few months 🥲 I can just imagine how peaceful being indoors with all the snow outside must be! I had How Sweet It Is on my TBR but after reading what you just said it’s making me wanna boot it off and add Eight Perfect Hours to it instead! Also, I hope that you don’t have COVID and that you start to feel better very soon, Lori! 🤞🏽

Dang…that friend really loves you. I don’t know that I love anyone enough to venture out to pick something up at 2:50am. lol Just kidding. I think…
