TTT: Auto-Buy Authors

So, this is later than I try to post a This week’s Top Ten was supposed to be “Most Anticipated Books Releasing In the First Half of 2022”…but I sort of did that list three or four weeks ago with the “Books on My Winter 2021 To-read List” list. So, back to the archives, where I saw this topic from 2018:

Who are some New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2018?

What a slam dunk! I loved this topic, and I wrote about it, with fancy graphics and everything. And then…

Well, then, I noticed that it’s the topic for January 25th. 🤦🏻‍♀️

So, that one’s written. Good on me for being so…proactive.

But I still had no topic for today, so back to the archives I went, looking for something that is NOT featured in the next few weeks. The winner?

Who are your auto-buy authors?

The problem I have with this top is is that I don’t buy anyone these days…as someone who is disabled, it’s very rare that I will buy a book. I am completely and totally a library (and KU) girl.

But still…I do have a set of authors who go on hold at the library without me ever even reading the blurb. So, here they are—-my AUTO-BORROW authors.

I will note that for some of these authors, I have not read the entire back catalogue—yet. Also, there are other authors—Chloe Neill, Chloe Neill, Chloe Neill—whom I love, but who may have a book or series that just doesn’t interest me. So, as much as I love her, she’s not an auto-buy. These are really “auto-borrow any new release I see without a second thought” authors.

Robert Crais
I would prefer that it be an Elvis Cole book, but as I believe that Robert Crais is our Dashiell Hammett, I’ll take anything he wants to write. Anything.

Louise Penny
One of the few authors whose back-catalogue I am completely finished with. I blew through the Armande Gamache series in a year or so, and sit desperately waiting for another. At least she writes one a year, unlike my bestie Robert Crais, who delights in making me wait.

Darynda Jones
Darynda Jones wrote one of my favorite series, the Charlie Davidson series, about a grim reaper with a devilish boyfriend. I loved that series, and her new work is quite a departure, but it doesn’t matter. I’m still in.

Harlan Coben
As above, I’d prefer that Mr. Coben write me a new Myron Bolitar book, but I will take ANYTHING. Table scraps are fine.

Lucy Score
Lucy Score owns me. The end.

Taylor Jenkins Reid
Taylor is skilled at playing with structure in a way that makes her books seem fresh. I’m not gonna lie—I was worried about both Daisy Jones AND Malibu Rising and loved them both. At this point, I’d follow her anywhere.

Christina Lauren
If it weren’t for Lucy Score, I’d say that Christina Lauren are the best romance writers writing today. But calling them second-best just seems…mean. So, let’s just say that, if Lucy Score owns me, then Christina Lauren lives rent-free in my head.

Kit Oliver
Of all the writers of queer fiction I read last year—and I read a couple score, I’d wager—Kit Oliver writes with the most heart. His books aren’t always funny, so the com part of rom-com isn’t always there…but they hit me in the feels so hard. There is a new one out this year, and even though it’s m/f this time, I’m expecting it to slay.

Andy Weir
I know. I didn’t like Artemis. But that didn’t stop me buying Project: Hail Mary, and I am already in a virtual line for whatever comes next. If there is an Andy Weir train, I’m so on it.

Graham Moore
Three brilliant books in a row. Can’t wait for #4.

  1. I’m a huge fan of Christina Lauren, and loved the one book I read by TJR, but have been meaning to read a book by Harlan Coben for quite some time. Maybe I’ll finally get the motivation to do it now. Great list!

  6. I haven’t usually had auto- buy authors since I’m such a mood reader, but I’ve noticed since I started blogging that I do have some now. I feel like Taylor Jenkins- Reid is at least an auto-take-a-look author since the book I read I really liked, and she has several others that I haven’t yet but am intrigued by…

  8. Same here. There’s a big difference for me with auto-buy authors and auto-read (or borrow) authors. I’m picky about which ones I’ll buy, but not about what I’ll borrow, LOL. Louise Penny actually fits both categories. I feel like the Gamache series is one I’ll want to re-read eventually, so I’m slowly collecting the books for my own library. I always wait for bookstore sales and coupons, though.

  9. There are definitely some authors whose books I want to read without knowing a thing about the book. I have only read one book each by Robert Crais and Louise Penney. I would like to read more by Penney especially at some point.

  10. The more I think about this one the harder it is to come up with authors where I’ve read everything and plan to read anything they release.

    Like, I’ve read nearly everything Lois McMaster Bujold has released; but skipped a couple of her earliest books that just don’t fit in with the rest. I’ll grab the Ben Aaronovich’s next Rivers of London novel but skip all the graphic novels of the same (never really was able to get into graphic novels). Then there are authors where one series or set of books just has zero interest for me. Or Mercedes Lackey, where I like nearly everything she releases except for the anthologies where she invites in other authors; after repeated disappointments I just give all of those a miss.

    Then there are authors with relatively few books or series that while I’ve enjoyed everything they’ve published to date I can’t swear I’d automatically grab the next book without first checking the blurb (or at least seeing it was in a series I was already following). Peter V. Brett and his Warded Man/Demon Cycle comes to mind as one of these. Also, Marko Kloos, A.J. Lancaster, and Naomi Novik

    In fact going through lists of authors I’ve read I don’t think any of them rate an automatic, guaranteed, ‘will read whatever they next publish’. Even my favorites, where I’ve read and liked everything they’ve published to date, I’m still likely to check to see if it’s in a series I’m already reading and if not check the blurb to see what it is before borrowing it. Yeah, it’s 95% likely I’ll grab and read it — but that’s not, quite, 100%.

  12. Some of my favourite authors on this list and they are my auto-buy too. Darynda Jones, Harlan Coben, Christina Lauren ( I currently have her ARC of Something Wilder) and just been sent Lucy Score’s latest ARC too as I am on her review team.

  14. Great choice of topic! I feel like I have a lot of auto-buy authors (though I don’t always buy their books right away cos $$$ lol) but TJR and CLo would be on my list as well 😍 I still have to try Andy Weir and Harlan Coben but my bestie who loves them is convinced that I’ll love them!

    I haven’t heard of any of these except for Andi Weir and I read “The Martian” which I really liked, and so many have recommended “The Project Hail Mary” that it’s on my wishlist now.

  31. I certainly have a list of auto-buy authors, but I also try to keep it small. I’ve become more and more intentional about the books I read, and I’m quite glad about this. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland on this week.
