TTT: If you like…

This week’s Top Ten is all about comparisons. Most of these are comparisons between a movie or TV show and a book with a similar feel. While some of these you have seen from me before, I tried to dig for some new options.

Speaking about books I seemingly won’t shut up about…

#10–If you like Game of Thrones…Try Pillars of the Earth

I know. I talk about Pillars a lot…but that is for a good reason and that reason is that YOU HAVEN’T READ IT YET.

Now, if you like all the GOT violence and backstabbing, the betrayal and the death of characters that you love, well, Pillars is your jam.

#9–If you like Bosch…try Bosch

I get that this one might be a little on the nose, but in the spirit of “the book is ALWAYS better, well…if you like the Amazon series Bosch, you should check out the source material. The Harry Bosch series is far richer and far more detailed than a TV series can ever hope to be…so if you like the show, you might LOVE the books.

#8–If you like Almost Famous…try Daisy Jones and The Six

These two books could be set in the same world. If you loved Almost Famous…and really, who didn’t? But if you do, you should run out right now and grab a copy of Daisy Jones.

#7–If you like Bones…try Some Girls Bite

So, there are no vampires in Bones, so why am I recommending a vampire book as a Bones analog? Because Some Girls Bite, as well as the rest of the Chicagoland Vampires series, is structured like a typical police procedural. There is a charming supporting cast in both, and in the end, the bad guys are caught, and justice is served.

The only real difference is the vampires. Although, if you squint at David Boreanaz…

#6–If you like Person of Interest…try The Killing Floor

I’ve been saying since that first Jack Reacher movie hit the screens that Jim Caviezel should be playing Jack, and a lot of the reason was this show, where the main character might have well have been named Mack Treacher. It was such an…I’m going with homage rather than rip-off, but let’s just say that I was shocked that Lee Child’s lawyers didn’t have something to say.

#5–If you like Atypical…try The Kissing Quotient

One is a family drama which features a young adult with autism spectrum disorder. The other is a love story about an adult with autism spectrum disorder. On the surface, the autism is all they have in common, but at the core, they are both stories of someone trying to make space for themselves in a world that doesn’t *quite* understand them. And as someone who only fit in very narrow spaces, I live for books (and TV) like that.

#4–If you liked Call Me By Your Name…try Someday, Someday

I am not sure what these two stories have in common. One is all about being accepted and loved for who you are, and not judged for whom you love. The other is about being judged and ostracized from your family for those same things. But the central love stories between Oliver and Elio and between Max and Silas are similar in their breathtaking beauty. Of all the romantic movies and books I have watched and read in my 600 years on the planet, these two are two that I can’t shake.

And I know that I’m likely not 600 years old. I just feel like it sometimes.

#3–If you liked 24…try I am Pilgrim

Pulse-pounding saving the world…on a time limit.

The thing with I Am Pilgrim is that it hooks you quick. Most thrillers, I’m sitting here yawning at 23%, waiting for something to start..or even for something to make sense. This one came out of the gate hot, and didn’t slow down even enough to take a breath. I loved it.

#2–If you liked Percy Jackson…try Big Red Tequila

Not a lot of people know that before he was the darling of the middle-grade, Rick Riordan was an accomplished mystery writer. Why he abandoned Tres Navarre for Percy Jackson is a mystery…but as I’d like to see a return to his more adult form, I encourage everyone to read this series. It’s really good. Full confession , though…it’s only six or seven books, so you will be left wanting more. That you might whine at Mr. Riordan for this deficit this was the furthest thing from my mind.

I promise.

#1-If you like Gossip Girl…try Prep

Prep made me feel like Curtis Sittenfeld read my actual diary, the one where I went on and on and on about a boy who wasn’t quite my boyfriend, but really not just my friend. The book was painful in the most exquisite way. Full disclosure that I didn’t watch Gossip Girl, but from what I have read, it seems like a similar vibe.

So that’s it…my take on If You Liked. If you have a comparison to offer, I’ll judge it in the comments.

  1. Ooh, yes, Almost Famous and Daisy Jones is a great comp! You’ve definitely piqued my interest with some of these titles (both the movies and books)! I haven’t seen Atypical but loved TKQ so will definitely have to check it out. I also had no idea Riordan had non-MG books out—I only know him for his MG! 😂 You are also slowly motivating me to return to Pillars of the Earth and finish it! LOL great post!

  3. This is such a nice post! I have never seen 24, but I loved I am Pilgrim. So I will take a look at that.

    I’ve read The Evening and the Morning and really want to read the rest of the series.

  9. Game of Thrones and Follett… what a combo! I’ve never read Follett but that comparison definitely has me curious.

    Almost Famous… that does make me more likely to pick up Daisy Jones- that and the Fleetwood Mac elements.

    I did not know that about Riordan either!
